The narrative style reminded me of 'The Curious Incident of a Dog in the Night-time', however this book was not as strong. It was hard to care about the characters, where the story was going.

 A Hemorrhaging of Souls
Author: Nicola Furlong
Genre: Mystery and Suspense
The story was predicable, the characters were all too flawed and every character was somehow interconnected with another character. It was a little too much to be believable.

Good for a mindless read, but that's about it.

Murder mystery set on Vancouver Island. I thought some of the characters seemed a bit too textbook "scarred" and Tempest Ivory...opera singer, overweight biker, psychologist...need I say more? Overall not a bad read though.

About A Boy9/10 - 2 reviews
 About A Boy
Author: Nick Hornby
Genre: General Fiction
I'd seen & enjoyed the movie version several years ago & the book was very good (probably better than the movie as I recall).
The story feels more "real" than most novels - it deals with everyday life yet is still somehow very interesting and compelling.
The storyline revolves around a boy who doesn't fit in well at school & a shallow guy in his 30's and how their lives become intertwined (and it's not cheesy).
I started reading it and just didn't stop - I look forward to reading another book by this author.

I could barely put this book down, and read it in less than a day.

'About a Boy' follows 2 boys - one a 12 year old boy, the other a 36 year old boy (and yes I mean boy) as their lives become intertwinned.

This coming of age story illustrates how people can differently affect your life.

I would recommend this book.

 All Is Vanity
Author: Christina Schwarz
Genre: General Fiction
This book is so different than Drowning Ruth...it started slowly but I got really involved in the tragic decisions and ultimate downfalls of the two main characters. The ending was satisfactorily bittersweet.

I read this right after reading another book with a similar plot (writing a novel etc. - don't want to give too much away).

I really liked this author's first novel (Drowning Ruth) and, although this 2nd book was quite different, I really enjoyed it as well. The first book I could see being described as 'literary genius' or some such thing. The 2nd as 'a raw, honest portrayal'. I would actually find it difficult to say which was the better book because I appreciated both for their respective talents.

Friendship (between childhood best friends) is a major theme as is trying to "get somewhere" in life (the 'better' job, more money, more socially desirable stuff).

I found the characters interesting and one of them in particular very witty in a very natural way.

Overall I found the book to be simple, real...it felt like something that everyday people experience with perhaps a little extra thrown in to make it a novel.

Allergy Self Help Cookbook10/10 - 1 review
 Allergy Self Help Cookbook
Author: Marjorie Hurt Jones
Genre: Food and Drink
This is a wonderful resource for those with dietary restrictions. This book is primarily for those with severe allergies or restrictions who are forced to use alternative foods to eat.

There are between 225 - 250 (depending on the edition) recipes, as well as a list of food families, details on creating a food rotation and suppliers for hard to find alternative foods.

This book has become my bible for baking and cooking. I would suggest that anyone with severe food restrictions should get this book.

My one complaint is that many of the recipes, especially with baking, desserts and snacks contain nuts which are a highly allergic food.

And God Created the Au Pair
Author: B. Newland

The format of this book is a series of emails between two sisters and their friends. Once I got used to the style I enjoyed the story. Nothing too amazing but an amusing light read nonetheless. Probably more enjoyable for mothers.

An incredibly revealing look at the author's early years.
I found I would get very engrossed usually but there were times when it was a little repetitive.
I found out at the end that there is a sequel and I would like to read that.
I like the author's style, it's more thinking out loud than composed, jumping from one thing to another as our minds often do.

Angels & Demons8.7/10 - 5 reviews
 Angels & Demons
Author: Dan Brown
Genre: Mystery and Suspense
Of all the Dan Brown books, I believe this was by far the best, followed by the Da Vinci Code. From the very first page, the novel was engrossing. And with this book, I found the twists in plot nearly impossible to predict.
The book is much better than the movie. The movie leaves out the reporter and the romance between Robert and Vittoria and makes some changes to the plot.
Highly highly recommend this book. It reads quickly and easily and is enjoyable and suspenseful the whole way through.

A great book! It may not be as good as The DaVinci Code and at some points I would have prefered it, if it was more realistic, but there 's loads of suspense and unusual twists on every page. Definetely worth reading.

Being Where You Are3/10 - 1 review
 Being Where You Are
Author: Martin Cecil
Genre: Health and Well-Being
Found this book and thought I'd give it a try. Ended up skimming much of it. The premise was to understand why 'troubles' occur -namely our own disharmony with God/nature. I didn't feel there was much I hadn't heard before and nothing grabbed me about the book.

Blindness8.2/10 - 6 reviews
 Blindness
Author: Jose Saramago
Genre: General Fiction
This is a great book. It is a story of survival and of relationships. There are a few pages that are hard to read,it has some very violent sections but it does not ruin the book. I would recommend this book to any adult.

Hmmm... mixed feelings on this one. Great premise - an inexplicable blindness epidemic overtakes a city throwing life into unimaginable despair and chaos. However, I found it just a bit tedious toward the middle and might have given up had I not already been sucked into the premise and wanting to find out how it gets resolved. And I admit it was an interesting study of society and how people react to extreme adversity.

The writing style is unique, with lots of crazy run on sentences, and lots of commas, and dialogue even embedded within, sometimes hard to follow, yet I did enjoy the style when the story was going somewhere, So check it out, says this reviewer.

Bridget Jones's Diary8/10 - 3 reviews
 Bridget Jones's Diary
Author: Helen Fielding
Genre: Chick Lit
I agree with Allison; this is definitely not reading of substance, but it was just what I needed. Fielding made me laugh out loud and sympathize with her struggling but humorous protagonist. This is a great beach read, or to be more seasonally appropriate, an awesome book to read when the holidays prove stressful.

This is great 'chick-lit'. It's fun, it's cute, and sadly it's identifiable.

This is a great book about 'being a girl'. It's not a deep work of fiction but it is great for something enjoyable to read.

 Calciyum!: Calcium-rich Dairy-free Vegetarian Recipes
Author: Rachelle Bronfman
Genre: Food and Drink
This is a great cookbook for dairy-free sources of calcium. I would recommend this book to those who are unable to eat dairy, or for vegan's.

My favourite soup - Chunky Brussel Sprout soup - is from this book.

There are lots of great food ideas in this book, but if you are highly allergic or unable to eat many common foods you will have to alter most of the recipes.

CSI: Binding Ties7/10 - 1 review
 CSI: Binding Ties
Author: Max Allan Collins
Genre: Mystery and Suspense
A tie-in to the hit tv show. If you like the show, you'll probably like the book. I'd certainly read more of them - you can never have too much Grissom after all, right ;) Despite the author's numerous literary awards, I didn't think the writing was really that great, but the characters are just like in the show and the book allows for a more in-depth & graphic case than the show can.
